ICON Vehicle Dynamics is proud to announce the release of our full lineup of complete suspension systems for the 2017-UP Ford F150 Raptor. After hundreds of hours of R&D and thousands of miles of real world on and off-road testing, ICON engineers have developed products that provide a true performance upgrade over the factory components found on the new and improved Raptor. The Gen. 2 Raptor is faster, lighter, and smarter than its older brother – suspension mounting locations have changed, a significant amount of weight was trimmed off of the truck, and new technology has been introduced both on the side of safety and performance. While lessons learned in the development of Gen. 1 Raptor product were kept near, ICON’s engineering team approached the task of developing four unique stages of suspension systems for the 2017-UP Ford Raptor as if it was an entirely new vehicle.

In typical ICON fashion, the new Raptor was pushed to its limits in stock trim to build a list of performance “needs and wants”. After this process, the ICON engineering team began to go over the truck front to rear to identify any opportunities to overcome the limits of the OE suspension and achieve the gains laid out in the previous phases of R&D.

The front end geometry of the Gen. 2 Raptor was found to be fairly similar to the previous model truck, however the shock mounting points had been moved higher up on the chassis. Seeing this as an opportunity, the team was able to design a 3.0 Series coilover that has more shaft travel while utilizing a barreled coil spring for more efficient packaging. The vehicle-specific valving featured in these shocks and the all new ICON-engineered spring work together to provide exceptional on-road ride quality with excellent off-road characteristics. ICON’s multi-stage hydraulic “Bump Zone” adds to the performance capability by providing an exponential increase in damping ability during the last 40% of compression travel for superior bottom-out resistance. In the ride zone, these 3.0 Series coilovers see a 50% increase in damping ability with the use of a significantly larger piston than what is found in the factory shocks. New 10” finned aluminum reservoirs provide a generous amount of shock oil while also providing an increase in surface area (over 200%) for enhanced cooling and consistent damping. The addition of ICON’s CDC Valve technology provides 10 settings of damping adjustment allowing the end-user to adjust the “feel” of the shocks for different terrains and vehicle cargo configurations.

ICON’s billet aluminum upper control arms are designed with built-in caster correction for predictable handling and feature on-vehicle camber/caster adjustment for precise vehicle alignment. These upper control arms include ICON’s patent pending Delta Joint. The Delta Joint is a heavy duty high angle ball joint that combines the durability of a ball joint with the performance characteristics of a traditional uniball. While the industry standard uniball does a great job of allowing the control arms of a vehicle to articulate with little bind, they do have an inherent weakness that leaves more to be desired when used in a daily driven application – exposure to the elements. The Delta Joint features a zinc plated housing providing the first layer of corrosion resistance, while a tough grease seal keeps potentially harmful elements out of the inner workings of the joint. Metal on metal construction and a greasable design increase the longevity of the Delta Joint while at the same time allowing for noise-free operation. What makes the Delta Joint unique is that it brings the best of both worlds to ICON upper control arms with features that make it more robust than a uniball, and at the same time capable of greater angularity than a typical ball joint.

The rear of the updated Ford Raptor was a highlight for ICON engineers, as new changes proved to be for the better. One significant change was that the shock mounting layout went from a parallel style setup to an offset design. While this is great for controlling axle wrap, it required a thorough reevaluation of the way ICON shocks would need to function to make the most of the refreshed rear end. In the R&D process it was found that Gen. 2 had more available wheel travel than the original Raptor, and by way of an offset upper eyelet ICON engineers laid out a 3.0 Series bypass shock that maximized travel while utilizing the factory shock mounts. To control the rear end in specific ranges of travel, these shocks feature 3 unique bypass zones – 2 on the compression stroke and one rebound. Unlike other shocks that have a loud bypass “click” when functioning, ICON bypass valves feature damped valve stops for quiet and precise operation. Easy-to-adjust knobs allow for quick changes to shock tuning without the need for tools, enabling the user to dial in their ride with minimal down time. When in use on and off-road, ICON’s patented Anti-Wobble Link stabilizes the shocks to prevent rotation and possible collision. Additionally, urethane shin guards protect the shock shafts and rod ends under grueling off-road conditions.

The function of the bump stop is to control and limit the final position of the suspension during up-travel. The factory bump stops have a limited energy absorption capacity and an uncontrolled release of this energy upon rebound – translating into a harsh ride and poor handling during more aggressive driving in rough terrain. ICON addresses this weakness with a hydraulic rear bump stop kit which includes heavy duty steel clamshell brackets, a billet aluminum frame crossmember, adjustable tension rods, hydraulic bump stops, and all of the necessary hardware required to complete the installation. Combining all of these components helps to increase energy absorption and chassis rigidity resulting in predictable handling and confidence inspiring performance.

To compliment ICON’s rear 3.0 Series bypass shocks and hydraulic bump stop kit, ICON engineers decided to scrap the OE rear leaf springs and develop a replacement that addressed a couple issues found in the R&D process. The result is a user-adjustable, multi-rate leaf pack that offers a major performance gain for almost every Raptor setup imaginable. To increase the ride quality of the truck and gain additional droop travel, the spring rate was designed to be slightly lighter than factory, which was found to be on the stiff side for smaller, choppier terrain. While most Raptor owners will embrace the improved ride quality this provides, there are those who have outfitted their trucks with a significant amount of weight and require more load carrying capability. Understanding this, ICON engineers designed the leaf pack with an additional leaf (included with kit) that can be exchanged or added to the pack, yielding an additional 20% or 40% spring rate that will work well for heavier vehicles. The resulting spring pack produces a ride that is much smoother in all terrain, significantly reduces axle wrap, while also adding durability and strength.

2011+ GM 2500HD Coil-Over Conversion kit by BDS Suspension

FULL PRODUCT ANNOUNCEMENT:

A few months back BDS Suspension introduced the 6.5″ coilover conversion high clearance systems, the latest performance option for the 2011-2017 Chevy Silverado HD and GMC Sierra/Denali HD trucks giving next level of performance and comfort to truck owners. These systems allow HD owners the ability to eliminate the rough riding traditional torsion bar suspension in favor of FOX 2.5 factory series remote DSC coilovers and combines them with the tried and true BDS high clearance IFS systems to truly unmatched performance on and offroad. For trucks already equipped with the non-coilover BDS 4.5″ and 6.5″ High Clearance Systems BDS is now offering an upgrade kit with all the components needed to convert over to the 6.5″ coilovers.

At the heart of this upgrade is a pair of FOX 2.5 Factory Series Coilover with remote DSC reservoir. These coilovers offer vastly superior dampening for impressive capability to soak up the harshest terrains offroad while offering comfort on your daily commute. These FOX coilovers feature a smooth bore and honed seamless alloy body, 7/8″ hardened stainless steel shaft, FOX coil springs, black anodized machined 6061-T6 billet aluminum mounts and FOX’s DSC (dual speed compression) adjustment technology. The DSC adjustment allows for easy adjustment of the vehicle’s suspension compression dampening to dial in the ideal ride performance to soak up the bumps, both large and small. The DSC has 12 adjustment points for the high speed compression as well as 10 adjustment points for the low speed compression allowing you to make large or small changes to further improve your performance. Adjustments can be made by simply twisting the “blue” high speed and “gold” low speed compression knobs located on the end of the remote reservoir of the FOX 2.5 coilovers. No tools or shop adjustments needed, allowing you to tune the suspension out on the trail. The coilovers come fully assembled, preset for 6.5″ of lift for optimal wheel travel. To mount the coilovers BDS supplies a bolt-on bracket that installs on the frame in the shock mount location. A weld-in support gusset is used to reinforce the upper mount, however still allows the kit to be completely reversible if the owner ever chooses to revert back to the torsion bar style suspension and upgrade the suspension on another truck.

In addition to replacing the factory torsion bars, the upper and lower control arms are upgraded to improved strength, travel, and accommodate the new coilovers. The uppers are FOX’s new performance upper control arms designed specifically for this system to integrate with the 2.5 coilovers. The arms are fabricated from large 1.5″ OD x .120-wall chromoly tubing, fully TIG welded for the highest quality, strength and durability. The arms utilize premium Moog brand ball joints and factory style rubber bushings for smooth, quiet operation and superior durability when compared to arms with uni-balls, poly bushings or heims. The ball joint cups are repositioned for optimal performance allowing a 30% improvement in wheel travel. The FOX upper control arms are finished in a durable black powdercoat and include a FOX branded billet aluminum ball joint dust cap. The control arms come fully assembled for easy install right out of the box. To compliment the uppers, the new lower control arms are built from high strength steel, fully boxed and internally gusseted. These lower arms integrate new reinforced lower coilover mounts and similar to the uppers use durometer specific rubber bushings at the frame mount and high quality Moog ball joints at the knuckle mount for quiet, low maintenance operation.

Let’s take it back to 4th of July weekend, 2016. Chris and Rob Leaming, father & son of XTC Power Products and XTC Motorsports are enjoying a day off, celebrating America’s independence, and planning their next showcase UTV to build for the season. A looming idea of a Subaru-powered UTV had stuck with them since the Rhino days, but without building a full one-off chassis, XTC knew the frame couldn’t keep up with the power. Glancing over at the RZR XP4 sitting in the garage, it seemed the timing was finally right.

The crew at XTC called their local RideNow dealer and ordered up all of the factory frame, interior, and exterior pieces they would need to start the new build. It would be far easier and cheaper not to start with a complete car, as not much of the RZR would remain intact. The partial frame was then trailered over to TMW Offroad in Mesa, Arizona. Once it arrived, Doug Tyler and his team of wild and talented fabricators began cutting gusseting, and lengthening the RZR’s chassis to accept what would end up being a 475 horsepower Gen 3 closed deck EJ25 Subaru motor.

TMW is no stranger to UTV motor swaps, having recently created one of the most head-turning, gorgeous RZR transformations to date; the V8-powered Werewolf. With the experience they gained from that project, TMW constructed a fantastic chassis capable of harnessing a turbo 4 cylinder boxer engine, a Mendeola 2D 4 speed transaxle from a Funco sand car, and a long travel suspension kit capable of over 20 inches of wheel travel. The entire back half of the frame (from behind the rear seats) was lopped off and replaced with TMW’s nearly-modular frame kit. This allowed them to squeeze the motor and transaxle into the frame without anything hanging out of the tube work. With the fabrication work done, the car was shipped off to Precision Powdercoat Inc in Phoenix, Arizona.

With a fresh coat of candy red applied, XTC took over the build and started laying out their wiring kits. XTC Power Products specializes in wiring and custom vehicle design work, having built some of the cleanest UTV plug and play wiring kits we have seen. Their flagship kit, the PCS-72, was used to lay out the wiring for all of the Rigid lighting, offering a plug and play 6-port switched control kit that requires no splicing, cutting, or mangling of any OEM wiring. The kit is designed to make wiring accessories to your UTV a breeze- simply mount the control boxes, wire in power and ground from a battery source, and run all of your accessory power wires to the included post block. We have used the kits before, and they save a monumental amount of time. How much time, you ask? According to XTC, this entire custom build was wired up and ready for final assembly in one day.

A PCS-44 power control kit handles the ignition, starter, and fan control functions for the Subaru power plant, with a PCS-1 plugged in to feed the Rugged Radios 660+ intercom and 60 watt radio set. XTC has power control solutions for any accessories you want to install on your UTV, buggy, truck, boat, or car. The fused and relayed accessory connections are an easy, safe, and reliable way to install any electronic add-ons to your vehicle. The $379 PCS-72S 6 switch kit comes with everything you need for installation, and adds strobing capability to the lighting circuits.

Once the chassis work and wiring was out of the way, XTC began installing the engine and transaxle setup. The engine was fully polished before installation, and TMW built a custom set of turbo headers to fit the T5 turbocharger to the EJ25 engine. Routing the power to the wheels is a set of Gearone Mid Board hubs with massive 930 CVs and chromoly axles. Going to the larger buggy style hubs does add weight to the car, but it makes for a nearly unbreakable drivetrain for normal desert and dune duty. Four piston front calipers were also added to help bring the big HellRazr’s speed into check.

To plumb the fuel system, the stock tank was modified to accept an external Bosch high-flow fuel pump. A Motec standalone ECU handles the programming for the Subaru motor. The 475 horsepower turbocharged 4 cylinder boxer engine was fitted with a new Gen 3 closed deck block, forged connecting rods and crank, half-inch head studs, and JDM Subaru heads. The whole package is good for about 110 mph on dirt! The RZR is street legal in Arizona as well, featuring XTC’s plug and play turn signal kit and a DOT approved glass windshield.

With the engine, transaxle, wiring, and chassis parts all wrapped up, XTC turned to the final details. Rigid Industries lighting covers the entire car, as XTC and Rigid have been long time business partners. Lighting additions include a Rigid headlight kit, a 10” SR2 Drive light bar in the grill, 2 Dually XL spot lights hidden behind the grill, 2 Dually DSS (Side Shooter) pods on the A-pillars, SRM Flush-Mount fender light kit, 2 rear Chase lights, a 30” SR Midnight Edition roof bar, and a collection of rock and dome lights. Maybe XTC should have called this car the rolling sun?

A TMW Offroad cage and door setup finalized the profile of the car. Inside, XTC lined the door panels with suede to match the Triple X suede bucket seats, draped in Crow 4 point harnesses. A tilt-up moon roof was added, along with an incredible Rockford Fosgate Stage 5 stereo system. The Stage 5 system features four 6.5” woofers with a 400 watt four-channel amplifier, a 10” slim mount subwoofer fed by a separate 700 watt amp, and a 2.7” digital display to control the audio system. This, too, was wired into one of XTC’s plug and play wiring kits.

Wrapping up the interior is a GlazzKraft carbon fiber dash kit filled with AutoMeter gauges, XTC switches, and a Lowrance 7” GPS kit. The entire car is built with incredible attention to detail, down to every last nut and bolt. It’s a true show car that Chris from XTC routinely takes out; no trailer queens here. The short two and a half month build time is impressive when you consider how much work really went in to the HellRazr. The entire car was then wrapped by Wolf Designs, draped in a gorgeous candy red vinyl that absolutely gleams in the light.

We caught up with XTC and the HellRazr at Camp RZR in Glamis, where the car went out for a few shakedown runs after its debut at the Sand Sports Super Show. The HellRazr went on to win Best In Show at the Camp RZRShow ‘N Shine Competition. The car made some incredibly fast passes up the hill, and was running its original tune setup at 14 psi when some bottom end noise started to occur. It wasn’t a surprise to Chris, as the engine had previously served plenty of years bolted into a Funco buggy donor car. After the trip, the engine was pulled out of the frame and shipped to Out Front Motorsports, a California-based Subaru specialty shop. The engine was fortified and built to withstand a whopping 20 psi of boost pressure, pushing its total power output near 500 horsepower.

With a UTV that attracts this much attention, XTC knew this car had to really run, and run it does. The TMW Offroad custom long travel suspension is controlled by Walker Evans Velocity Series coilovers. The 2.5” coilovers are the same length front and rear, made possible by mounting the front shocks to the lower A-arms instead of the uppers. This setup allows proper geometry for ease of tuning, and it really helps the HellRazr put the power down and float over big sand whoops and through G-outs. For its first sand outing, XTC bolted up the same tire and wheel setup they had on the Funco buggy, with 30” tires on 15” wheels. The car definitely needed more paddle, so Chris ordered up a set of 34” tall paddles and custom wheels for its next dune trip.

The beauty of the Subaru engine platform is its low center of gravity. The entire engine is only about a foot tall, with cylinders that are opposed horizontally and laid flat, as opposed to an inline or V configuration. This allows the engine to be positioned low in the frame, with only the intake and coolers positioned above it. An enormous CBR aluminum radiator and custom intercooler keep the engine running cool, with a custom bed scoop feeding air to the vital bits. It is all packaged beautifully in the modified TMW frame- so much so, that it almost appears factory.

Established in 2006.

XTC Motorsports’ first location was in Chandler, AZ and featured a 3,500 sq ft showroom and installation center where XTC was formed and began to grow. In May of 2010 XTC Motorsports moved to a bigger better location at 925 N McQueen Rd #101 in Gilbert, AZ where it now operates out of a 5500 sq ft facility with a much larger showroom and shop to better serve our customers. Unlike the larger business conglomerates, XTC Motorsports can offer you more options in your suspension and vehicle modifying as we’re not pushed to sell any one brand, but pull from a huge variety of resources.
